How to Check a Gearbox When Buying a Used Car in Malaysia
Buying a used car in Malaysia? The engine usually gets all the attention during an inspection — but the gearbox is often the more expensive repair if something goes wrong.
A gearbox overhaul costs RM 2,500 to RM 5,000+. Catching a problem before signing the deal can save you that entire sum, or at the very least give you serious negotiating leverage.
Here is exactly how to check a used car's gearbox — even without being a mechanic.
Before the Test Drive: Visual Inspection
Check Under the Car for Leaks
Red, pink, or brown fluid dripping from underneath the transmission tunnel or near the gearbox casing indicates an ATF leak. Fresh leaks are red and obvious. Old leaks show as dark brown or black residue on underbody components.
A minor seep is manageable. Active dripping is a red flag.
Check the Transmission Fluid (If Accessible)
If the vehicle has an ATF dipstick (most conventional automatics do, most newer CVTs do not), pull it:
- Healthy fluid: Bright red, clear, no strong smell
- Overdue fluid: Dark reddish-brown, may smell slightly burnt
- Problem fluid: Dark brown or black, strong burnt smell, metallic sheen or particles
Dark, burnt fluid does not necessarily mean the gearbox is failing — it may just mean a fluid change is overdue. But it does mean maintenance has been neglected, which increases the risk.
During the Test Drive: What to Feel
Cold Start — Drive Off Immediately
The first 1–2 minutes after starting tells you a lot. Engage Drive from Park and pull away slowly.
Watch for:
- Engagement delay — more than 1–2 seconds before the car moves
- Shuddering or juddering when pulling away
- Unusual noise from the drivetrain
Light Throttle Acceleration
Accelerate gently from 0–80 km/h. In a stepped automatic, you should feel smooth, gentle gear changes. In a CVT, acceleration should be seamless with no stepping sensation.
Watch for:
- Hesitation between gear changes
- Engine RPM rising without matching acceleration (slipping)
- Harsh, abrupt gear changes
Medium to Hard Acceleration
Accelerate more firmly. This loads the gearbox more heavily and reveals problems invisible at light throttle.
Watch for:
- RPM flare — revs jump suddenly before the car accelerates (classic transmission slip)
- Shuddering under load
- Clunking or banging during gear changes
Uphill Driving
Find a hill and drive up it. Transmissions under load reveal more than flat-road driving.
Reverse Check
Shift to Reverse and check for:
- A long pause before reverse engages
- Harsh engagement (loud clunk)
- No movement despite being in Reverse
Sport Mode or Manual Mode (If Equipped)
For modern transmissions with manual or sport modes, try selecting gears manually. Each gear should engage promptly and smoothly.
After the Test Drive: Warning Signs to Weigh Up
| Symptom | Concern Level | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| Minor engagement delay (cold start) | Low–Medium | Fluid service likely needed |
| Shuddering at low speed | Medium | CVT fluid or torque converter issue |
| Slipping under hard acceleration | High | Worn clutch packs or CVT belt |
| Warning light on dash | High | Active fault code logged |
| Burnt ATF smell | Medium–High | Overheated fluid, possible internal damage |
| Reverse delay or clunk | Medium | Worn reverse clutch pack |
Ask for the Full Service History
Any credible seller of a used car should be able to show you some record of transmission fluid changes. If maintained at an authorised dealer, service stamps in the book will confirm this.
A car with no service history at 120,000 km is a risk. A car with verified gearbox services is significantly lower risk.
When in Doubt, Get a Pre-Purchase Inspection
For any significant used car purchase, spending RM 100–200 on a pre-purchase inspection at a reputable workshop — including a scanner diagnostic — is money well spent.
A specialist gearbox workshop can identify fault codes, assess fluid condition, and give you a clear reading on whether the transmission is healthy — often revealing issues invisible to a general mechanic.
