6 Signs Your Gearbox Is Failing (Don't Ignore These)
A transmission failure rarely happens without warning. In most cases, the gearbox sends signals weeks or even months before it stops working entirely. The problem is that many drivers either do not recognise the signs or choose to ignore them.
Catching a transmission problem early is the difference between a RM 300 fluid service and a RM 4,000 overhaul. Here is what to watch for.
Sign 1: Jerking or Shuddering During Gear Changes
If your car jerks, shudders, or hesitates when changing gears — whether automatically or manually — your gearbox is telling you something is wrong. This symptom can point to worn clutch packs in an automatic transmission, a degraded CVT belt, or contaminated transmission fluid.
The sensation is often described as the car "hiccupping" when accelerating from a stop, or a vibration that comes and goes with speed.
What to do: Do not dismiss this as a road surface issue if it happens consistently. Have the transmission diagnosed.
Sign 2: Slipping Gears
You press the accelerator and the engine revs rise — but the car does not accelerate as expected. The engine is working, but the power is not being transferred to the wheels efficiently.
In an automatic transmission, slipping usually means worn clutch bands or low hydraulic pressure. In a CVT, it typically indicates belt wear. Either way, driving with a slipping transmission is dangerous — acceleration when you need it (such as overtaking) becomes unpredictable.
Sign 3: Burning Smell
Transmission fluid breaks down under heat. When it degrades, it loses its lubricating properties and begins to burn. A sweet, slightly acrid burning smell from under the car is a telling sign that the fluid is overheated or contaminated.
This is often accompanied by sluggish shifting or delay in engagement. Do not top up old fluid with new fluid — degraded fluid needs to be fully flushed and replaced, and the underlying cause of the overheating needs to be identified.
Sign 4: Delay When Shifting Into Drive or Reverse
When you move the gear selector into Drive (D) or Reverse (R), the car should engage within a second. If there is a noticeable pause — two, three seconds before the car moves — this is abnormal.
This hesitation on engagement is often an early sign of internal hydraulic pressure issues or worn seals. It is also one of the symptoms that is easiest to dismiss as "normal" until it becomes significantly worse.
Sign 5: Unusual Noises in Neutral or While Driving
A healthy gearbox is quiet. If you hear any of the following, have it checked:
- Whining or humming — often related to bearing wear or CVT pulley issues
- Clunking when shifting — can indicate worn mounts or internal gear issues
- Buzzing at idle — often a fluid pressure or pump issue
The key is that these sounds appear or intensify with vehicle speed, not with engine revs. If the sound tracks your speed rather than your throttle, it is likely transmission-related.
Sign 6: Check Engine or Transmission Warning Light
Modern vehicles have dedicated transmission control modules (TCMs) that monitor the gearbox for irregularities. If the check engine light or a dedicated transmission warning light appears, the system has logged a fault code.
Many drivers see the check engine light and wait to see if it goes away. With transmission-related codes, this approach is particularly risky — the codes are there because the system has already detected a problem that requires attention.
A scanner diagnostic will retrieve the fault codes and, when combined with a physical assessment and road test, give you a precise understanding of what is happening inside the gearbox.
Why Early Action Matters
The internal components of a gearbox are interconnected. A failing seal causes fluid leak, which causes pressure loss, which accelerates wear on the clutch packs, which leads to a full rebuild requirement.
What costs RM 400 to fix at the first warning sign can cost RM 4,000 by the time it becomes undriveable.
